ArHI was detected by spectroscopic means for the first time. Analysis of the g3S-(0+)-X1S+(0+) band system yielded estimates for the van der Waals bond lengths in the g and X states. The molecular constants obtained for the g state are Te0 = 65698.7(5), D0 = 393(12), De = 417(12), (omega)e = 49.0(2) and (omega)exe = 1.44(3) cm-1. The implication s of the results for studies of the one-atom cage effect in RgHX complexes are considered.
