A series of compounds, [Ni(AA)2X]Y (AA= diamines etc; X=N3 and NO2; Y=ClO4, PF6 etc) with S=1 have been synthesized, and their magnetic properties and crystal structures have been investigated. They have linear-chain structures. It has been found that the magnitude of the Haldane gaps can be controlled by substituting the bridging groups (X) and in-plane ligands (AA). On the other hand, [Ni([15]aneN4)N3]-PF6, [Ni([14]aneN4)N3]ClO4·H2O and [Ni(en)2NO2]BF4 show spin glass behaviors.
