Purpose and Background
The environmental problems that the world faces today, of which global warming is the most significant, are closely linked to other issues including energy supply, population growth, availability of food, etc. Furthermore, these are problems that no one country can hope to solve on its own. In East Asia, which has achieved impressive economic development over the past few decades, the growth of manufacturing industry has made environmental problems a particularly pressing issue, and it has become clear that the countries in the region will need to collaborate with neighboring nations if they are to solve these problems.
It was with this background in mind that the then Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Yasuo Fukuda, announced at the Third East Asia Summit (EAS), held in Singapore on November 21, 2007, that by Japan welcoming over 500 undergraduate and graduate students in environment-related academic fields from East Asian nations to Japan during the period 2007 – 2011 under the Japan – East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme, a meaningful contribution to environmental education would be made.

Objectives
The goal of this project is to enable students from ASEAN nations and the other EAS participant nations to take part in first-class study programmes arranged by Japanese universities, within the framework of the JENESYS Programme, so that they can strengthen their knowledge of environmental science and technology in a systematic manner, while the opportunities for intensive exchange with Japanese students will help to build up new, effective networks of contacts, besides contributing to the development of future leaders in environmental-related fields. At the same time, having these outstanding students at Japanese universities will help to promote education and research exchange between the universities of Japan and those of the ASEAN member nations ant the other East Asian nations, thereby helping to boost the international competitiveness of all of the universities concerned, and contributing to the future development of the East Asia region as a whole.

Institute for Molecular Science (IMS) is a center of the basic research of physical/chemistry fields in Japan and has a role for the center of both domestic and international collaboration. From 2008, IMS has organized another JENESYS Programme implemented by JSPS (the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) for chemistry/physics fields. IMS has provided the opportunity for young researchers from Asian countries to stay in the laboratories related to the basic research for environmental and energy problem. From 2010, IMS will also launch the JASSO-JENESYS Programme focused on the education for graduate students to stay in IMS up to 6 months. Through the experience, we encourage them to continue the basic research in the environmental science fields in their own countries as well as to build up the future collaboration.

Programme Activities
(1) All the participants are slotted into the assigned laboratory to engage their own research for up to 6 months
(2) SOKENDAI provides lecture courses for basic physics and chemistry. Course Credit can be awarded for the applicants.
(3) All the participants are strongly encouraged to join “SOKENDAI Winter School”, 3-day international lectureship, which will be held in between February 21-25, 2011.
(4) Mini-symposium for the JASSO-JENESYS Programme will be open co-organized with Winter School in February 2011. All the participants are requested to give the presentation about their research report on the JENESYS Programme.
