Family-related supportive measures for researchers

The conditions below are as at August 2016. Contact the relevant office to make sure and get the latest and detailed information.


A. Childcare support

1) Childcare leave and partial childcare leave (see, *1 and C. Leave benefit.)

a) Childcare leave (unpaid but employment insurance coverage is effective):
Employees are entitled to a predetermined length of unpaid childcare leave up until his or her child's 3rd birthday.

b) Partial childcare leave:
Employees are entitled to necessary length of unpaid partial childcare leave to take care of his or her pre-school child.

2) Sick/Injured childcare leave (*2)

Employees are entitled to take up to 5 days/yr of paid time off to take care of his or her sick/injured child of 6th grade and under; Up to 10 days in case of two or more such children.

3) Academic assistant system (*3)

Employees who have pre-elementary school children can request to place academic assistants to carry out his or her research.

4) Childcare facility

Sakura Nursery School, co-established by three Okazaki Institutes of National Institutes of Natural Sciences (namely, NIBB, NIPS, and IMS), supports researchers' work/life balance and smooth return to work by accepting their infants from 57 days after birth.

Overview of Sakura Nursery School on campus

Applicable ages: from 57 days to 3 years

Capacity: 18 children

Eligibility: employees/visiting researchers/graduate students, who are engaged in research at the 3 Okazaki Institutes on a regular basis

Open: 8:00 to 19:00 (max. extension: to 20:00), Monday to Friday

Closed: National holidays and Dec.29-Jan.3

B. Family care support

1) Family care leave and Partial family care leave (unpaid but employment insurance coverage is effective: see *1 and C. Leave benefit)

Employees are entitled to take up to 186 days in total of unpaid family care leave to take care of his or her subject family member in care-requiring condition.

2) Time off for family care (*2)

Employees are entitled to take up to 5 days/yr of paid time off to take care of his or her subject family member in care-requiring condition; Up to 10 days in case of two or more such family members.

C. Leave Benefits

Employees who are insured by employment insurance or mutual aid association will receive leave benefits when their wages are reduced to a certain standard while taking childcare leave, partial child care leave, family care leave or partial family care leave.

Provided you are insured by employment insurance, you will receive:
Childcare leave benefit equal to 67% (50% after six months) of the wages until the child reaches one year of age (or one year and six months of age under such conditions as nursery service is unavailable) ;

Family care leave benefit equal to 40% of the wages for maximum 3 months of one family care leave. (Multiple payments will be possible for the identified care-receiver when the conditions matched.)

D. Promoting employment of female researchers (*3)

1) Institute for Molecular Science is committed to enhancing employment of female researchers. It takes positive action on researchers' appointments and promotes supportive and effective management regarding maternity leaves, childcare leaves and family care leaves.

2) Institute for Molecular Science provides female employees with supportive information, e.g. JSPS Restart Postdoctoral Fellowship which aims to help their smooth return to work from childbirth and child-raising.

*1) Different length of leaves is applied to the Contract Employees.
*2) Counted as Special Paid Leaves, except unpaid for the Contract Employees.
*3) Only Research-and-Academic Staffs are eligible.
