CSC-IMS Scholarship Program

1. Program Overview

This program is intended for (i) students or researchers selected from Chinese universities/research institutions to complete their doctoral degree at SOKENDAI, or (ii) doctoral degree candidates from  Chinese universities/research institutions to undertake collaborative supervision research (cotutelle program) at IMS in a research field closely related to their doctoral thesis research at their institution or (iii) researchers affiliated to a Chinese university/research institute who conduct joint research at the IMS.

 

If the selected regular doctoral students fulfil the requirements for completion of the SOKENDAI doctoral program and pass the thesis examination, they will be awarded a doctoral degree by SOKENDAI.

 

As a general rule, up to five students per year may receive a scholarship. However, support for SOKENDAI doctoral students is limited to two per year.

2. Application Requirements

(1) Applicants must be of Chinese nationality and meet the requirements set out by the CSC and the following application requirements at the time of application.

a) Applicants for admission to the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of SOKENDAI shall have obtained the equivalent of a Master's degree or shall have obtained the equivalent of a Master's degree by the end of the month preceding the intended date of admission.
b) Applicants for cotutelle program shall be candidates for a doctoral degree from a Chinese university/institute.
c) A first-year student who is enrolled in a SOKENDAI Three-Year Doctor Course at the time of application shall also be eligible to apply.
d) Joint research applicants (i.e. visiting researchers/postdoctoral fellows) must have a master's degree or higher and be full-time employees of a Chinese university/research institution.

 

(2) The applicant shall secure a letter of acceptance or certificate of enrolment from the IMS. To this end, they shall fulfil the acceptance requirements, including a high level of English/Japanese language proficiency, as determined by the IMS according to their acceptance status.

 

(3) Applicants must also fulfil the other application criteria set by the CSC.

 

(4) The scholarship recipient agrees that he/she must return to China after completion of the research or Doctoral degree supported by the Program.

3. Application Procedures

(1) Applicants for SOKENDAI must apply directly to SOKENDAI by the deadline set by SOKENDAI and contact SOKENDAI Office at IMS below before submitting the documents for application to SOKENDAI to inform them of application.

4. Support from IMS

IMS will provide financial supports for students for maximum 60 months from RA (Research Assistant) expenses.

For particularly outstanding students, there is a system of increased support through the SRA selection test.
