Robert A. Millikan Distinguished Service Professor, Takeshi Oka, of the University of Chicago visited to IMS on November 7th, responding to the invitation by the Director General of IMS, Professor Iwao Ohmine. On this occasion, Prof. Oka gave a lecture, entitled "Astronomy and physical chemistry: H3+ in the Galactic center," which represented the importance of the simplest molecular ions in the interstellar chemistry as well as new astronomical observation obtained by implementing the H3+ ion as the probe. The talk described the endeavor made by Prof. Oka during more than 30 years, and his long-standing motivation, shown in the 8 years spent for the laboratory detection of H3+ and the further 16 years before its detection in interstellar media, deeply impressed all the precipitants of the seminar.
