Director General Maki Kawai has been awarded the Japan Academy Prize for her significant contribution to “Single molecule spectroscopy elucidating chemical reactions at solid surfaces.”
Using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), which visualizes the surface of solids at the atomic level, she has developed a novel method to quantitatively observe the structure and the electronic and vibrational states of a single molecule adsorbed on solid surfaces. She also applied this method to achieve the state selective chemical reactions with identifying the molecular states that are thermally averaged in ordinary conditions. Molecules adsorbed on the solid surfaces are changed their properties by the effect of the surfaces. Observation of states and reactivity of such molecules at solid surfaces by this novel method enables us to clarify the nature of the molecules at work. Her contribution will lead to various applications in the fields of catalyst chemistry and materials science and is highly acknowledged internationally.
