Distinguished Professor Makoto Fujita receives the Humboldt Research Award

Distinguished Professor Makoto Fujita has been honored with the prestigious Humboldt Research Award by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

The Humboldt Research Award is one of Germany's most esteemed academic honors, presented annually to up to 100 world-leading researchers across all disciplines. The award recognizes individuals whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.

Research Achievements and Award Grounds
Distinguished Professor Fujita is widely recognized as a pioneer in "metal-directed self-assembly," a field where complex molecular architectures are formed spontaneously simply by mixing metal ions and organic molecules. Following his landmark synthesis of the "molecular square" in 1990, he has consistently developed massive polyhedral cages and intricate network structures. By utilizing the internal cavities of these structures to encapsulate other molecules, he has paved the way for diverse applications, including sensors for hazardous substances and "nano-reaction vessels" that enhance the efficiency and selectivity of chemical reactions. Furthermore, his development of the "crystalline sponge method"—a revolutionary technique that enables the structural analysis of trace amounts of compounds without the need for traditional crystallization--continues to transform the landscape of global chemistry.
