Summary | Nd:YAG lasers are versatile devices, which have been thoroughly studied over the past decades. Yet they still yield new phenomena to be discovered and understood! By operating a Nd:YAG laser in two orthogonal polarization modes, with different frequencies, we can generate RF to THz frequencies at the beat signal between the two modes. Such a laser may have applications in defence radar signal analysis, microwave communications, or metrology. Revisiting Lamb's model of laser mode coupling, we have studied the mode coupling between the two modes in various laser systems, and have related this to the beat strength. Our widest tuning range is obtained from a "twisted mode" ceramic Nd:YAG microchip laser. |
