Summary |
Photonic quantum memories are a key enabling technology for long-distance quantum networks. Scalable networks require a means to render the random operational outcomes characteristic of linear optical processes deterministic. In this talk, I shall describe progress toward building a true single-photon quantum memory using hot atomic ensembles, in structures that are easily reproducible, and therefore suited to multi-node networks. The challenges for efficiency, bandwidth and noise will be discussed, as well as the opportunity afforded by these devices for quantum synchronisation, time-frequency quantum operations and entanglement distribution. |
