Summary | The mobility and transformation of micrometer-sized molecular aggregates (i.e. oil droplets, liquid crystalline droplets and tubes, and giant vesicles) in water under chemical stimuli are introduced. These molecular aggregates comprised of lipophilic and/or amphiphilic molecules have drawn much attention as plausible prebiotic cellular structures and dynamic microreactors related to the origins of life. Especially, we highlight recent advances and issues concerning the construction of such systems and discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of protocellular systems. |
