Abstract | Water’s strong hydrogen bonds give it unique properties, especially at surfaces where the hydrogen-bond network ends abruptly. Water interfaces, which are common in both nature and technology, differ structurally and chemically from bulk water. The roles of hydrogen-bond termination, interfacial charges, and their effects on the arrangement of ions and water remain debated. My presentation will demonstrate how surface-specific vibrational spectroscopies can characterize the outermost water monolayer, quantify interfacial ion distribution, and track chemical and electrochemical changes at water surfaces and interfaces in detail. |
