The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) took place between July 30 and August 4 in 2023. It is part of a greater group of conferences that are being organized by a non-profit organization and this conference was the first on CISS. It was great to see so many people in person whose research papers I have previously read and whose works continue to influence my own. It gives your research a broader perspective beyond your own laboratory workbench and being able to discuss the results presented in my poster -chiralitydependent spin transport in helical tetrapyrroles -with the eminent figures of my field was a very rewarding experience. My old professor from my undergraduate time in Germany also gave a talk there and not only was I happy to reconnect with him, I was also incredibly humbled to have parts of my research featured in his talk. Hence, I would like to thank SOKENDAI and IMS for making my attendance possible.
It is worth noting that this GRC took place just five days after I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation. While both still need time to sink in properly, it slowly dawns on me how little we actually know as scientists; Our answer to one question immediately spawns ten new ones. Realizing this may be a crucial part of maturing as a scientist and with all the experiences we make along the way, I hope we never run out of questions.
