Assistant Professorship Appointment Policy in the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS)*

For the purposes of accelerating productive research activities of Assistant Professors and maintaining high mobility of human resources in the field of molecular science, IMS strongly encourages Assistant Professors to transfer to an external position approximately six years later from the contract start date. According to the same context, in principle, an internal promotion is prohibited. Assistant Professors whose research periods exceed five years will be asked to submit a report of research achievements as follows;
 

[Reporting research achievements]
1. A director of the department or facility who belongs to the same department as the Assistant Professor will report the Assistant Professors’ research achievements and his/her concrete efforts to transfer to his/her next position in the directors’ meeting. An extension of the research period of the Assistant Professor will be approved in the meeting every year.
 

2. After the approval of the research period extension in the directors’ meeting, the Professor or the Associate Professor who supervises the Assistant Professor will report the Assistant Professors’ research achievement and her/his concrete efforts to transfer to his/her next position in the faculty meeting. The extension of the research period of the Assistant Professor will also be approved in the faculty meeting.
 

*This policy has been practiced since the establishment of IMS.
