概 要

Optical methods are traditionally viewed as rather informative and simple tools to collect the information about molecular structures and interactions. However, the fundamental difficulty of extracting the exact structure of large molecules in solution calls for the development of new spectroscopic techniques capable of interrogating molecular structure in vitro and, potentially, in vivo.
In my talk I will discuss the applications of Coherent anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS) and third-harmonic-generation (THG) spectroscopies to study molecular nanostructures and their interactions. Both of these spectroscopic tools are based on the use of ultrashort pulse laser sources, which will be also discussed in the talk with the emphasis on how to make them simple and the most useful for particular applications. These new tools are then successfully applied to observe collagen (type I) structural transformation in solution leading to the formation of a pre-cholesteric phase, which was independently confirmed by using several other spectroscopic techniques.

In the second part of my talk I will discuss potential applications of light spectroscopy for early diagnostics of cancer and demonstrate how different spectroscopic tools can work together to reveal the formation of molecular assemblies of human serum albumin in the presence of lead ions.
