概 要 | Materials with simultaneous presence of polarization and magnetization are called magnetoelectric multiferroics. We will present a tutorial review on the recent emergence of this novel class of materials. Using mesoscopic modeling with multiple coupled ferroic order parameters (e.g. strain, magnetization, polarization, shuffle modes) we willl investigate the mechanism of this behavior in functional perovskites. The notion of color symmetry will be introduced in order to describe various magnetic phases. The role of long-range, anisotropic interaction such as those arising from either the elastic compatibility constraints or the (polar and magnetic) dipolar interactions in determining the physical properties will be discussed. Multiferroics can also act as possible metamaterials for negative refractive index and unusual nonlinear optical properties. |
