概 要

The oxidation of secondary and primary alcohols to ketones and aldehydes or carboxylic acids are pivotal reactions in organic synthesis, traditionally performed with stoichiometric oxidants such as chromium(VI) reagents, manganese dioxide, hypervalent iodine compounds or the Swern reagent (DMSO/oxalyl chloride).Increasingly stringent environmental legislation has, however, focused attention on the development of atom efficient, low-waste catalytic methodologies employing oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as the stoichiometric oxidant.We shall discuss the mechanisms and synthetic scope of various chemocatalytic and biocatalytic methods for the selective oxidation of primary and selective alcohols, using dioxygen or hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant, whereby the only coproduct is water1.

In particular the following systems will be elaborated :

- palladium complexes and palladium nanoparticles as catalysts for aerobic oxidations in aqueous media
- stable nitroxyl radicals as organocatalysts, in the absence or presence of copper complexes or copper-dependent enzymes as cocatalysts, for aerobic oxidations
- hypervalent iodine (III) compounds as organocatalysts for oxidations with hydrogen peroxide
