概 要 | Quantum magnetism describes the properties of many materials such as transition metal oxides and cuprate superconductors. One of its elementary processes is the propagation of spin excitations, whose space- and time-resolved observation at the single-spin level has so far remained elusive. Here we used single-site-resolved imaging of atoms in an optical lattice to directly probe the quantum dynamics of a deterministically created spin impurity, which we tracked as it spreads through either one-dimensional Mott-insulating or superfluid systems. A post-selection of the measurements allowed us to reduce the effect of temperature, leading to remarkable agreement with zero-temperature theories on timescales arising from magnetic superexchange processes. |
