概 要

LDSI mass spectrometric imaging provides spatially resolved, molecule-specific information on sample surfaces. The sample molecules are introduced into the gas phase by a high repetition rate 349 nm UV laser. This requires no additional matrix as used in MALDI, and hence reduces the spectral complexity. In addition, tunable VUV photons allow us to ionize the neutral molecules desorbed by the laser at threshold energies, thereby reducing molecular fragmentation compared to electron impact or multi-photon ionization techniques. To date, we have applied LDSI to study organic matter in soil, determine binding energies of organics on mineral surfaces, image plant cells, and determine melanin composition in extant bird feathers and million year old fossils. Here I will report my study of melanin - a novel electronic material,3 and organic decomposition in soil.
