概 要

Self-assembly of nanoparticles (NPs) is a formidable way to explore their distant-dependent collective interactions and achieve materials with unique properties. However, obtaining nanoparticle assemblies with complexity characteristic those of sophisticated natural materials (non-close packed arrangements, hierarchical structuring and active tunability) is a grand challenge. In this respect, we have shown that composites of metal nanoparticles with liquid-crystals can exhibit non-closed packed symmetries and thermo-/light-responsive behavior, with structural switchability translating to functional tenability of plasmonic [1,2], epsilon near zero [3] and luminescent [4] properties. Here, the possibility of achieving reconfigurable, helical nanostructures by combining LC-coated NPs (spherical and nanorods) with liquid crystals will be discussed.
